Grasmere


GRASMERE, pop 184, 70 km southeast of CRANBROOK near the Montana border, is a small LOGGING and ranching (see CATTLE INDUSTRY) community in the E KOOTENAY. Originally called McGuire after an early settler, it was renamed in 1922 from choices submitted by local schoolchildren. The Tobacco Plains KTUNAXA (Kutenai) reserve, so named because tobacco was grown in the area for ceremonial use, is nearby, as was Flagstone, a former settlement on the CROWS NEST SOUTHERN RWY.
