KANE, Paul, artist (b 3 Sept 1810, Cork, Ireland; d 20 Feb 1871, Toronto). The famous "Indian painter" crossed the continent in 1846 and descended the COLUMBIA R to arrive at Fort Vancouver on 8 Dec. It was the first time a professional artist had gathered material along the FUR TRADE routes of the West.
