Mackerel


MACKEREL is a sleek fish with a finely forked tail fin and recessible dorsal and pectoral fins for fast swimming. It belongs to the family Scombridae, which also includes TUNA, and like tuna it is a wide-ranging fish of the open seas. Five species have been found in coastal BC waters but only 2 are regular visitors: the chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) and the larger jack mackerel (Trachurus symetricus).
