Maple Bay

MAPLE BAY is a seaside community east of DUNCAN, looking onto Sansum Narrows between SALTSPRING ISLAND and VANCOUVER ISLAND. Known as Hwtlupnets to its COWICHAN First Nation inhabitants, it was the site of a great battle in about 1840, when a large group of Coast Salish (see SALISHAN FIRST NATIONS) warriors defeated their dreaded enemies the Lekwiltok, a group of KWAKWAKA'WAKW from the north.
