Mellon, Henry Augustus


MELLON, Henry Augustus, naval captain and financier (b 1840, Nottingham, England; d 1916, Vancouver). As a member of the Royal Navy he saw action in India during the Sepoy Rebellion from 1857 to 1858. He later worked his way up to the rank of captain on vessels of the Dominion Steamship Co. In 1880 he immigrated to Canada, settling first in Manitoba, then late in 1886 in VANCOUVER, where he built the first home in the West End after fire destroyed the city.
