PORTUGUESE immigration to BC began in 1852 with the arrival of "Portuguese Joe" SILVEY, who ran a store in GASTOWN and later moved to the SUNSHINE COAST with his SECHELT wife. He was followed to the coast by Joe Gonzalves, who arrived in the 1860s from the Madeira Island. Gonzalves, who also married a First Nations woman, helped to found Irvines Landing at PENDER HARBOUR. The nearby village of MADEIRA PARK is named for his homeland. Small but steady immigration continued from the GOLD RUSH...
