SALAL (Gaultheria shallon) a member of the heather family (Ericaceae) is one of the most common shrubs in BC's coastal forests, in places forming a dense ground cover. It is characterized by evergreen leathery leaves and, from May to July, small, pinkish bell- or urn-shaped flowers.
