ST ROCH was an RCMP Arctic patrol vessel. In 1941–42 it made the first west-to-east navigation of the Northwest Passage. The 32-m diesel-powered wooden vessel was launched in N VANCOUVER in 1928 and used to carry supplies and to serve as a floating police detachment. The historic wartime cruise, under Capt Henry Larsen, was intended to assert Canadian sovereignty in the Arctic.
