Stuart Island

STUART ISLAND, 40 km north of CAMPBELL RIVER at the mouth of BUTE INLET, is in the territory of the HOMALCO First Nation. It was first settled in the early 1900s; LOGGING and commercial FISHING are the main employment. There are 2 settlements: BIG BAY on the west side of the island, and Stuart Island at the southern tip, which has a resort, marina, store and post office. Between the 2 are the fearsome YUCULTA RAPIDS. George VANCOUVER named the island after John Stuart, the Earl of Bute.
