Tofino


TOFINO , district municipality, pop 1,466 (2001), is the jumping-off point for CLAYOQUOT SOUND, just outside the north end of PACIFIC RIM NATIONAL PARK RESERVE on the west coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND, 135 km west of PORT ALBERNI. Situated in the territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht nation (NUU-CHAH-NULTH), it was named by Spanish explorers for the hydrographer Vincente Tofino de San Miguel. Since the creation of the park reserve in 1970 and the paving of the road, it has become a major TOURIST centre....
