Bligh Island


Bligh Island (49˚39'15" 126˚31'15" NE of mouth of Nootka Sd, W side of Vancouver I). William Bligh (1754–1817) served as master (the warrant officer in charge of navigation) of HMS Resolution on Capt James Cook’s third voyage of discovery to the S Pacific. In 1778, while visiting Nootka Sd, Cook refitted his vessel at Resolution Cove on this island. Bligh was later promoted to lt and earned a reputation as a fine surveyor but a harsh, bad-tempered cdr.
