Dayman Island


Dayman Island (48˚58'20" 123˚41'15" E side of Stuart Channel, SW of Thetis I, Gulf Is). Lt Joseph Dayman served aboard HMS Thetis on the Pacific Station, 1851–53, under Capt Augustus Kuper. From 1857 to 1860, as cdr of HMS Cyclops, Gorgon and Firebrand, he pioneered deep-sea sounding techniques in support of early cable-laying operations. He was appointed a capt in 1863.
