Defender Shoal


Defender Shoal (50˚07'00" 125˚23'00" Menzies Bay, W side of Discovery Passage, N of Campbell R). The US yacht Defender won the America’s Cup in 1895, beating British challenger Valkyrie III, owned by the Earl of Dunraven. The innovative vessel, designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, used aluminum in its construction and was owned by William Vanderbilt, Edwin Morgan and Oliver Iselin.
