Descanso Bay


Descanso Bay (49˚11'00" 123˚52'00" W end of Gabriola I, Gulf Is). In 1792, at the end of a long day of rough weather, the Spanish naval officers Dionisio Alcalá-Galiano and Cayetano Valdés—cdrs of the Sutil and Mexicana, respectively—named a safe anchorage at the W end of Gabriola I Cala del Descanso, or “cove of rest,” in a gesture of appreciation.
