Dunsmuir Islands


Dunsmuir Islands (48˚59'31" 123˚47'29" In Ladysmith Hbr, E side of Vancouver I). Industrialist and politician James Dunsmuir (1851–1920) founded the town of Ladysmith in 1901 as a residential community for the workers at his nearby Extension coal mine. Born at Ft Vancouver, he was the son of coal baron Robert Dunsmuir (1825–89), who became BC’s wealthiest man on the strength of his Nanaimo mines and the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Rwy, which he built in 1883.
