Redfern Island


Redfern Island (50˚54'00" 127˚35'00" W of the Walker Group, Queen Charlotte Str, off NE end of Vancouver I). Dr Thomas Redfern was assistant surgeon aboard the 16-gun HMS Scylla, under Capt Frederick Herbert, on the Pacific Station in 1870. He served a second commission on the BC coast in 1874 as surgeon of the gunboat Rocket, under Lt Cdr Charles Harris, but died suddenly in 1877 at Victoria’s naval hospital of heart disease and was buried at the naval cemetery in Esquimalt.
