Retreat Passage


Retreat Passage (50˚42'00" 126˚36'00" Between Bonwick I and Gilford I, E end of Queen Charlotte Str, W of Knight Inlet). Retreat Passage appears on the 1867 edition of an Admiralty chart based on 1860 and 1865 surveys by Capt George Richards and Lt Daniel Pender, respectively. According to a note at BC’s Geographical Names Office, the name may refer to a raid on the Kwikwasut’inux (Kwakwaka’wakw) village of Gwa’yasdams on Gilford I by Nuxalk First Nation warriors in the late 1850s....
