Boston


BOSTON was an American-owned sailing vessel that arrived in NOOTKA SOUND on the west coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND on a trading voyage on 12 Mar 1803. Capt John Salter and his 26-man crew met the local NUU-CHAH-NULTH people, led by their chief MAQUINNA. As trading and refitting progressed, a misunderstanding developed between the traders and the local people, and on 22 March Maquinna and his followers attacked the ship, killing all hands except John JEWITT and John Thompson. The Boston was beached and three weeks later it was accidentally burned. Jewitt and Thompson remained captives of the Nuu-chah-nulth for two and a half years.
