Heinze, Frederick Augustus

HEINZE, Frederick Augustus, industrialist (b 5 Dec 1869, Brooklyn, NY; d 1914). A graduate MINING engineer, he was already owner of a COPPER smelter in Montana when he arrived in BC in 1895 looking to invest in the ROSSLAND mining boom. He purchased property at the future site of TRAIL and in 1896 built a SMELTER, still one of the province's major industrial facilities. He also built the COLUMBIA & WESTERN RWY linking his smelter to the mines. Two years later he sold his interests to the CPR, which in 1906 combined them with other holdings to create the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co, now COMINCO. Heinze left the province to continue his mining career in Montana.
