Where Mountains Meet the Sea: The History of Coastal British Columbia
by Daniel Francis
Where Mountains Meet the Sea is a narrative history of coastal British Columbia by the editor of the Encyclopedia of British Columbia, Daniel Francis. It is being written and published online in installments. When it is finished, it will tell the story of the coast from the arrival of the first European explorers right up to the present day. The trade in sea otter pelts, the relations between newcomers and the First Nations people, the origins of the salmon fishery, the rise of coastal logging and mining, travelling by Union Steamship and the Princess liners, the whaling industry: these are just a few of the many subjects included, told through the lives of the interesting characters who helped to shape this unique part of the world.
It has been several decades since anyone has told the story of the coast in one readable, comprehensive volume. Eventually, Where Mountains Meet the Sea will appear as a printed book. But you can read it now, almost as it is being written. Every week the author, Dan Francis, posts another installment of the story right here. This unprecedented publishing project is an essential reference for anyone interested in the history of coastal BC.
