ALDERMERE, a farming community 13 km southeast of SMITHERS, was the earliest non-aboriginal settlement in the BULKLEY R valley. It was established about 1904 and had several stores and a hotel. The GRAND TRUNK PACIFIC RWY considered putting a divisional point there but settled on Smithers instead. Most residents ended up moving 1 km west to TELKWA, at the confluence of the Bulkley and Telkwa rivers, which had better water access. By 1920 Aldermere had disappeared.
