Capilano, Joe (Su-a-pu-luck)

CAPILANO, Joe (Su-a-pu-luck), Squamish leader (b circa 1840 near Squamish; d 11 Mar 1910, N Vancouver). He grew up in SQUAMISH villages in HOWE SOUND, then moved to the ROMAN CATHOLIC mission RESERVE near CAPILANO R in N VANCOUVER. A sawmill labourer and stevedore, he became chief of the Squamish Nation in 1895 and a leading political activist on FIRST NATIONS issues. In 1906 he led a delegation of elders to England to meet King Edward VII and inform him about the struggle for aboriginal title...
