Capilano, Joe (Su-a-pu-luck)


CAPILANO, Joe (Sahp-luk), Squamish leader (b circa 1854 near Squamish; d 11 Mar 1910, N Vancouver). He grew up in SQUAMISH villages in HOWE SOUND, then moved to the ROMAN CATHOLIC mission RESERVE in N VANCOUVER. A sawmill labourer and stevedore, he later moved to the Capilano Reserve at the mouth of the  CAPILANO R. He became chief of the Squamish Nation in 1895 and a leading political activist on FIRST NATIONS issues. In 1906 he travelled with two other chiefs, Charlie Silpaymilt (Cowichan)...
