Mountaineering


MOUNTAINEERING began in BC when the completion of the CPR in 1885 made the mountains of the BC Interior accessible to mountaineers from around the world. Soon British and American climbers, often led by Austrian or SWISS GUIDES, were reaching the summits of the ROCKY and COLUMBIA MTS. The first climber of note was a Canadian surveyor from Aylmer, QC, James Joseph McArthur. In 1887 he and an assistant climbed Mt Stephen near FIELD while surveying for the Dominion Land Surveys.
