SWISS GUIDES were brought to Canada by the CPR in 1899 to promote TOURISM at its resort hotels in the ROCKY and COLUMBIA Mts. The first Swiss-trained guides, Christian Haesler Sr and Edward Feuz Sr, were stationed at GLACIER HOUSE near the summit of ROGERS PASS. Over the next few years more of these professional MOUNTAINEERING guides came to Canada to lead well-heeled clients to the previously unclimbed summits.
