Portlock, Nathaniel


PORTLOCK, Nathaniel, maritime fur trader (b circa 1748; d 12 Sept 1812, London, England). He entered the Royal Navy in 1772 and was a mate on the Discovery during James COOK's visit to the coast in 1778. In 1785 he was chosen by the KING GEORGE'S SOUND CO to lead its first expedition to the coast to trade for SEA OTTER pelts.
