Burrell, Arnold Alfred

BURRELL, Arnold Alfred, artist (b 19 Feb 1924, Winnipeg; d 9 May 1991, Maple Bay). He graduated from the Vancouver School of Art (see EMILY CARR INSTITUTE OF ART & DESIGN) in 1956, then spent 2 years in northern BC living among and painting FIRST NATIONS people. In 1960 he moved to VANCOUVER ISLAND, where he lived for the rest of his life. While setting up outreach art classes through the Art Gallery of VICTORIA, he developed his own post-abstract impressionist style, participating in solo and group shows throughout BC and in eastern Canada. In the mid-1970s he withdrew from teaching and exhibitions to paint in solitude. Most of his work is in private and corporate collections.
