EC17. WRINKLED STAR, slime star, sea star

Sutton Islets, Egmont, s. BC
Seal Reef, Lasqueti Island, s. BC

Pteraster militaris, Asterias militaris

to 15 cm (6 in) across

Japan, n. Alaska to n. Oregon

subtidal, 10–1,100 m (33–3,600 ft)

This star resembles the preceding species, but appears to have “been in a bathtub” far too long. Its rays are also noticeably longer. After receiving sperm through pores adjacent to her tube feet, a mature female broods at least some fertilized eggs within a body chamber. Up to 40 juveniles, each measuring about 1 cm (0.4 in) across, are ultimately released. Photograph B shows an unusual colour variant.
