Bennett Bay

Bennett Bay (48˚51'00" 123˚14'00" E side of Mayne I, Gulf Is). The Bennett family, whose members homesteaded and farmed beside the bay, were Mayne I pioneers, arriving about 1880. Thomas Bennett (1845–1924), a native of Ireland, and his Scottish wife, Elsie (1846–1926), immigrated to Canada with two children in 1878. From 1895 to 1900 they were the proprietors of the Point Comfort Hotel (later the Cherry Tree Inn), a Mayne I landmark until 1958, when it was torn down. Elsie Bennett also served as a Gulf Is midwife for many years. Bennett Bay was submitted by the Public Works dept in 1939 as a well-established name and adopted by the hydrographic service in 1951.
