70 MILE HOUSE, pop 923, on Hwy 97 in the south CARIBOO, has declined in importance since the 1920s when it was an important supply centre for the surrounding ranches (see CATTLE INDUSTRY). In 1862 Charles Adrian established a historic roadhouse here on the CARIBOO WAGON ROAD; it burned down in 1956. The community was named for its distance from LILLOOET.
