Agricultural Land Reserve

AGRICULTURAL LAND RESERVE (ALR) was created in 1973 by the NDP government of Dave BARRETT to arrest shrinkage of the province's agricultural land base. With the best arable land comprising only .5% of BC's total area, it was a cause of great concern that through the 1960s and early 1970s more than 4,000 ha of farmland was being lost annually to other forms of development, primarily residential.
