Aquaculture, Shellfish

AQUACULTURE, SHELLFISH, refers to the culturing, or farming, of shellfish. In BC the industry centres around CLAMS and OYSTERS, though smaller experimental and commercial culturing takes place for GEODUCKS, SCALLOPS, MUSSELS, ABALONES and PRAWNS. (Because prawns have a tough chitinous exoskeleton they are commonly classified as shellfish.) In 2003 the BC shellfish culture sector produced 8,600 tonnes of cultured products with a wholesale value of $15.9 million.
