BC FISHERMEN'S UNION was founded in 1899 with locals in NEW WESTMINSTER and VANCOUVER, then spread to fishing communities along the coast. It led the famous FRASER RIVER FISHERMEN'S STRIKES of 1900–01, when fishers attempted to negotiate a higher price for SALMON from the STEVESTON canners.
