BABCOCK, John Pease, public servant (b 1855, St Paul, MN; d 1936). As a young man he joined the California Fish and Game Commission, where he became an expert on SALMON. After moving to BC he became the province's first commissioner of fisheries in 1901 and began conducting surveys of salmon spawning grounds in the FRASER R watershed.
