BALCOM, George Washington Sprott, seal and whale hunter (b 19 Sept 1851, Sheet Harbour, NS; d 21 Dec 1925, Victoria). Descended from a New England sea-going family, he entered the sealing trade, making voyages into the S Atlantic. In 1892 he rounded Cape Horn and eventually arrived in VICTORIA, where he settled and continued his involvement in sealing (see FUR SEAL).
