BATES, Maxwell, artist, architect (b 14 Dec 1906, Calgary; d 14 Sept 1980, Victoria). After studying art in Alberta he lived in England during the 1930s. He joined the British army and spent most of WWII as a German prisoner of war. Back in Calgary after the war he practised ARCHITECTURE as well as continuing to paint as an influential member of the Calgary Group.
