BAYNES LAKE is a farming and resort community 50 km southeast of CRANBROOK in the E KOOTENAY, site of a weekly farmers' market. The 8-km-long lake was named after Andrew Bain, who settled in the area in 1896. Frederick Adolph operated a large SAWMILL here from the early 1900s until 1923, and the settlement, which was also a station on the CROWS NEST SOUTHERN RWY, reached a peak population of about 250.
