Baynes, Robert Lambert


BAYNES, Robert Lambert, naval officer (b 1796, England; d 1869, England). The son of a commander in the Royal Navy, he entered the navy himself when he was 14 years old. After a distinguished career he became commander of the Pacific Station, based at Valparaiso, Chile. When the FRASER R gold rush began in 1858 (see GOLD RUSH, FRASER R), he was sent north in the warship Ganges to maintain law and order and British sovereignty.
