BELFORD, 8 km west of NELSON on the south shore of the KOOTENAY R, and Granite, its neighbour 1 km to the north on the CPR, formed a MINING and AGRICULTURE district that flourished in the 1910s. Granite, site of an early quarry and lime kiln, was surrounded by mining claims.
