BIG LAKE is a historic ranching district (see CATTLE INDUSTRY) 50 km northeast of WILLIAMS LAKE in the CARIBOO. The area was first settled in the 1890s by William Parker, who established Big Lake Ranch and operated an early stagecoach express service. Big Lake Ranch no longer exists, except as the post office name, which has been retained by popular demand despite attempts by postal authorities in the 1980s to change it to Big Lake.
