CANAL FLATS, village, pop 700 (2006), occupies flatland between the south end of Columbia Lk and the KOOTENAY R. The site was named McGillivray's Portage by David THOMPSON when he visited in 1808. The present name derives from William BAILLIE-GROHMAN's canal-building scheme of the late 1880s. A canal with a lock was dug between the river and the lake but it was hardly ever used.
