CANFORD, 15 km west of MERRITT beside the NICOLA R, was the site of the Nicola Valley Lumber Co SAWMILL, established about 1906. The mill was on the CPR's Nicola branch, which later became part of the KETTLE VALLEY RWY, and was a major supplier of lumber to the railway. It burned in 1919, was rebuilt and taken over by Nicola Valley Pine Mills, and operated into the 1950s. The community was named by a local rancher after Canford Manor near Bournemouth, England.
