CARMI, pop 44, a GOLD mining settlement on the KETTLE VALLEY RWY 50 km southeast of KELOWNA, was named after Carmi, IL, home of postmaster J.C. Dale who staked a claim here and laid out a townsite. A mine operated intermittently from 1900 to 1934; a concentrator was built in 1920. LOGGING took place in the 1950s. Carmi was mostly abandoned by the 1970s.
