CHU LAI, merchant (b circa 1847, Guangdong Province, China; d 4 June 1906, Victoria). He arrived in BC in the 1860s and established himself as a merchant in the CARIBOO goldfields (see GOLD RUSH, CARIBOO). In 1876 he opened a company in VICTORIA, Wing Chong, selling general merchandise and conducting business of various kinds.
