CONGREGATION EMANUEL TEMPLE, BC's first synagogue, was built in VICTORIA in 1863, just 5 years after the arrival of the first members of the city's Jewish community (see JEWS) during the FRASER R GOLD RUSH. The building was designed in the Romanesque style by the local firm Wright and Saunders. It has been restored and is the oldest surviving synagogue in Canada.
