CORAL is a member of the phylum Cnidaria (sea nettles), an invertebrate related to the SEA ANEMONE and the JELLY (jellyfish). It is characterized by many small polyps, each having a mouth surrounded by a ring of tentacles, which contain stinging capsules. Familiar tropical corals are colonial structures, that is they grow in interdependent colonies, which form large branching growths. Coral reefs are formed as hard corals die and new corals grow on the hard skeletons.
