CORMORANT is a large, black water bird, roughly the size of a GOOSE. It has a long, slim bill, hooked at the end, and a slender head and long, S-shaped neck. Cormorants nest in colonies on cliff faces and rocky islets near the water, where they feed by diving for fish. They appear awkward on land as they are adapted for an aquatic habitat: they have large webbed feet and can remain underwater for more than 2 minutes at a time.
