COTTONWOOD HOUSE, 30 km east of Quesnel, opened in 1865 as a roadhouse on the old CARIBOO WAGON ROAD leading to the goldfields at BARKERVILLE (see GOLD RUSH, CARIBOO). It was owned by John and Janet Boyd and their children from 1874 to 1950. The provincial government purchased the property in 1961 and turned it into a historic park: the buildings have been restored so that the area has the look of the 1870s.
