Coulthard, Jean


COULTHARD, Jean, composer (b 10 Feb 1908, Vancouver; d 9 Mar 2000, Vancouver). She was one of Canada's leading modern composers and the first composer from BC to achieve national recognition. She studied first with her mother, then in England at the Royal College of Music in the 1920s with, among others, Ralph Vaughan Williams. In 1947 she began teaching at UBC, an association that lasted to her retirement in 1973. A prolific worker, she created about 400 pieces of music for various instruments...
