CRAVEN, Margaret, writer (b 1901, Helena, MT; d July 1980). Raised in Washington state, she put herself through Stanford Univ in California and determined to be a writer. She worked as a journalist and wrote magazine fiction for 37 years before publishing her first book, the wildly successful I Heard the Owl Call My Name, in 1967. Based on the work of the missionary Eric POWELL at KINGCOME INLET, which Craven visited, it tells the story of a young priest's encounter with FIRST NATIONS culture....
