CULHANE, Claire Eglin, social activist (b 18 Sept 1918, Montreal; d 28 Apr 1996, Vancouver). As a young woman she was a member of the Communist Party and supported the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion in Spain. She worked in the trade union movement before temporarily retiring from activism to raise her 2 children. During the 1960s she worked in a hospital in Vietnam and became an outspoken opponent of Canada's involvement in the war there, once chaining herself to the public gallery in the House...
